Landholder Nature Conservation Project
For three years, WESROC has been
engaged with financial assistance from the Natural Heritage Trust in helping
private landholders to carry out conservation management of their
properties, with a focus on areas of State and national concern. Very
little of the remnant vegetation in the WESROC subregion is protected
formally in conservation reserves or National Parks and as a result many
regional ecosystems are poorly conserved. Most of the subregion is in
freehold title, with some 3 500 rural holdings, most of which are small by
Queensland standards. Clearance of vegetation, inappropriate fire regimes,
some land uses and weed infestation have become major threats to
biodiversity in this region and incentives are needed to retain areas in a
natural state. This project provides incentives and extension services to
land managers to bring about nature conservation on private land.

This project offers landholders -
 |
practical advice, information and assistance to develop and implement
vegetation management action plans and increase their awareness of
improved nature conservation management practices and sustainable land
uses, and |
 |
financial assistance for strategic on ground works to protect, restore and
manage priority remnants. |
